At a meeting in Prague on May 8, 2009 the EU urged Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Egypt and Iraq to commit to expanding a web of half a dozen east-west gas pipelines. The EU's preference is to build the euro 10 billion Nabucco pipeline which bypasses Russia.
